Broncos get crushed by Nebraska-Omaha 5-1

Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) – Despite holding a shot advantage of 34-25 the Western Michigan men’s hockey was crushed by the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks 5-1 on Friday night at Lawson Arena in National Colligate Hockey Conference action.  

Five different players scored for the Mavericks (12-14-2, 9-7-2-1 NCHC), who jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Broncos scored their only goal from Chase Balisy with 2:11 left in the second period. The Mavericks responded with three third period goals including an empty netter with 1:15 left in the game.

While the Broncos played well when a man-down, killing off five of six Maverick power plays, they were unable to capitalize on any of their eight power plays and could muster only seven power play shots.

Making the start for the Broncos was Lukas Hafner, who was less than spectacular, allowing four goals on 25 shots. Ryan Messa stopped 32 shots for the Mavericks.

With the loss, the Broncos (14-11-5, 8-8-2-2) will remain at best in a tie for fifth place in the NCHC, eight points out of first place and are still on the outside looking in for the a top 4 seed for the NCHC Tournament in three weeks.

Kenney Morrison and Taylor Fleming each assisted on the Balisy goal. Balisy has seven goals on the season.

The Broncos and Mavericks conclude their weekend series on Saturday night at Lawson Arena. Puck drops at 7pm.
