Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) – Junior Austin Richie scored a career-high-tying 22 points to help lead the Western Michigan men’s basketball team over the Ohio Bobcats 90-74 on Wednesday night at University Arena.
Richie scored 13 in the second half, and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line, along with 3-for-3 from downtown for the game. Richie also dished out three assists without committing a turnover in 37 minutes.
Western Michigan shot 59.6 percent, including 16 of 22 in the second half. The Broncos outscored Ohio 53-38 in the second half and broke the game open with a 17-4 run to pull ahead 69-59 with 5:40 left in the game.
David Brown reached double figures for the 26th consecutive games, as the Mid-American Conference’s leading scorer added in 20 points, while Shayne Whittington and Connar Tava each scored each for the Broncos (13-8, 6-3 MAC)
Maurice Ndour had 20 points to lead the Bobcats (16-6, 6-3 MAC).
WMU is now in a three-way tie for the third best record in the MAC, and trails Toledo by a game for the MAC West lead. The Broncos travel to DeKalb on Sunday afternoon to take on the Northern Illinois Huskies. NIU (10-11, 4-5) has won three in a row after dropping four straight. Tip-off is set for 4:30pm.
Game Notes: Tucker Haymond was shutout while being limited to just 10 minutes because of foul trouble. Taylor Perry picked up the slack, contributing five points and four rebounds in 30 minutes…WMU shot 8-for-13 (61.5%) from downtown. Ohio was 11-for-23 (47.8%)…The Broncos outscored Ohio 38-22 in the paint and 24-7 in points off turnovers…Richie scored 22 points as a freshman against Oakland.
