Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) -- Despite missing practice on Friday and Saturday with an illness, a less than 100% Shayne Whittington was still able to score 22 points and haul in 11 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season, as the Western Michigan Broncos beat the Eastern Michigan Eagles 75-67 on Sunday afternoon at University Arena.
“I still feel like crap right now,” Whittington said during the post-game press conference.
Whittington was held out of practice on Friday and Saturday and Head Coach Steve Hawkins was prepared to play without the 6’11 Paw Paw native. But with a Mid-American Conference Regular Season Title within reach, playing Whittington was the right move.
Whittington scored 17 of his game high 22 in the second half, including five points during a 7-0 Bronco run after the Eagles rallied to tie the game at 62 with 5:57 left in the game, bouncing back from a 12 point deficit. The Eagles trailed 34-26 at halftime.
David Brown added in 20 points for the Broncos (18-8, 11-3 MAC), who have now won seven straight and nine of their last 10 to remain in first place in the Mid-American Conference, a half game above Toledo in the standings, while holding the all-important tie breaker.
Austin Richie chipped in 10 points in 23 minutes, while improving the Broncos record to 10-0 when the junior guard scores in double figures. After getting in early foul trouble, Connar Tava struggled to find a groove and had just one point in 15 minutes.
Darell Combs had 21 for Eastern Michigan (15-12, 7-7 MAC)
