Five Keys to Victory for Western Michigan against Iowa

by Colin Windecker

1. Stop the run – The Broncos defense on average is allowing 245 yards on the ground per game, and gave up a season high 332 against Northwestern last week. Iowa’s leading rusher Mark Weisman is gaining five yards per carry and must be contained.

2. J Schroeder needs to be more consistent – Schroeder has done an outstanding job handling the punting duties but not one of his seven punts against the Wildcats went for more than 40 yards. Winning the field position battle will go a long way in an attempt of an upset.

3. Score in the first quarter – Western’s offense has been held to only three points in the first quarter. When the Broncos beat Iowa in 2007, they scored 19 points before the Hawkeyes could even get on the board. A repeat performance will be needed.

4. Protect the line of scrimmage – The Broncos’ offensive line prevented the Wildcats from sacking Tyler VanTubbergen and will have to continue to give TVT time in the pocket to find open receivers.

5. Continue to pull the positives – Coach Fleck said the team has improved every week and must continue to get better every day. Remember all the good things they have accomplished over the first three weeks and putting it to use for 60 minutes.

Prediction: Iowa 26 WMU 17
