ST. CLOUD, MN (WKZO)- For a second straight night the Western Michigan University hockey team upsets the #3 St. Cloud State Huskies this time by the score of 2-1. The Broncos took five out of the six possible points from the Huskies this weekend.
The Broncos got on the board at 7:10 in the first period off the stick of Will Kessel. Nolan LaPorte and Sheldon Dries were credited with the assists.
The Huskies were able to even up the score at the 16:58 mark of the first period as Kalle Kossila put it past Broncos goalie Lukas Hafner from Jonny Brodzinski and Ryan Papa.
During the second period the Broncos got caught with too many players on the ice twice within a minute span and Chase Balisey got called for hooking a minute after the second too many players penalty. The Broncos had to kill off a 5-on-3 power play for about three minutes. The Broncos were able to succeed and the game remained tied 1-1 after two periods of play.
The Broncos broke the tie early in the third period as Shane Berschbach found the back of the net from Kenney Morrison and Lukas Hafner at the 4:39 mark. The Broncos had to hold off a flurry of shots from the Huskies and a Huskies goal was waived off with just a little over three minutes to go in the game.
The Broncos were out shot 33-19 in the game.
The Broncos were 0-for-3 on the power play and St. Cloud State was 0-for-6 on the power play.
The Broncos improve to 12-8-4 (6-5-1 NCHC) and they are now tied for fourth in the NCHC.
The Broncos will take next week off, but they will be back in action the following weekend on Jan. 31st and Feb. 1st at home verses Minnesota-Duluth. The puck drops both nights at 7:05 pm.
