by Carolyn Binder

OXFORD, OH (WKZO)- The Western Michigan Broncos fell behind in the first period 2-0 and pulled goalie Lukas Hafner for Frank Slubowski.  Things got better from there though.

The Broncos used a three goal second period to come from behind to defeat the Miami of Ohio Redhawks 3-2 Saturday night.  Josh Pitt got the scoring started early in the second period as he found the back of the net 2:58 into the period from Nolan LaPorte and Jordan Oesterle.  The Broncos evened it up at the 7:18 mark as Chris Dienes beat Miami of Ohio goalie Jay Williams.  Taylor Fleming and Justin Kovacs were credited with the assists.  The Broncos then took the lead at the 19:31 mark as Will Kessel fired a shot past Williams from Colton Hargrove and Mike Cichy.

The Broncos then withstood a flurry of shots from the Redhawks in the the third period as they out shot the Broncos 13-6.  The Redhawks also out shot the Broncos for the game 34-25.  The Broncos had a  penalty called on them with just over 30 seconds left to go in the game and the Redhawks also pulled their goalie.  Miami of Ohio had a 6-on-4 advantage, but Slubowski kept the puck out of the net and the Broncos skated to the 3-2 victory.

With the sweep the Broncos vaulted themselves to third place in the NCHC standings for the moment as they have 27 points and find themselves only one point out of first place.

The Broncos 14-10-4 (8-7-1 NCHC) travel to Colorado College next weekend.  Game time on Friday is set for 9:00 pm and 8:30 pm on Saturday.  Both games can be heard on Z96.5 FM.
