The Broncos opened the scoring on Colton Hargrove’s seventh goal of the year. Hargrove sent a picture perfect set up pass from Justin Kovacs past UMD netminder Aaron Crandall at the 4:29 mark of the first period to put Western Michigan up 1-0 in front of 3,644 fans at Lawson. Kovacs tallied his 15th assist of the year on the goal. UMD evened the score on a Joe Basaraba even strength tally at the 15:27 mark of the period.

The Broncos missed on a pair of power play opportunities, and outshot Minnesota-Duluth 14-11 in the opening frame.  Western Michigan finished 0-6 on the power play with 11 shots.

The Bulldogs took the lead when Alex Iafallo beat Frank Slubowski on a wraparound off of a Bronco turnover to give Minnesota-Duluth the 2-1 lead at the 5:12 mark. Austyn Young netted his first career goal at the 11:26 mark of the second to seal the sweep for UMD. Young used a Bronco line change to create a 2 on 1 and slip the puck past Slubowski.

Western Michigan was outshot 35-33 on the night. Frank Slubowski finished with 32 saves. The Broncos killed off all five UMD power play chances on the night including 10 shots with the extra skater.

Western Michigan (12-10-4/6-7-1-1 NCHC) travels to Miami February 7th and 8th.
