KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — 2024 is going to be a big election year and local clerks offices are gearing up for a lot of changes.
They not only have a presidential election to contend with, but a Democratic primary in February, the august primary for state races, and the smaller elections. There is also a new batch of state reforms, approved by voters last year that have to be implemented.
Kalamazoo City Clerk Scott Borling says he will be adding a new staffer just to oversee all the additional volunteers and staff members they are going to need.
County Clerk Meredith Place says clerks countywide have agreed to work together to provide 4 early voting stations located around the county, to meet a requirement that 9 days of early voting be added.
Proposition 2 also requires more drop boxes, tracking for absentee ballots and that election audits be done in public, which all require more work.
It all comes at a time in our recent history when scrutiny on the voting process has never been higher.
