Tigers Roundup 4/4

by Colin Windecker

Cabrera blasts career hit 2K

History took place at Comerica Park on Friday afternoon during the Tigers 10-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. In the 8 th inning with the Tigers up 8-2, Miguel Cabrera stepped to the plate with a runner on and blasted a pitch into the left field seats for his 2000 th career hit. With reaching the milestone, Cabrera become the 277 th player in Major League Baseball history to get 2000 hits and the 9 th fastest to do it. The home run capped off a four hit day for Cabrera. He also drove in three runs.

Smyly gets first win of the season in familiar fashion

With Thursdays game against the Royals being rained out, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus decided to skip Drew Smylys turn in the rotation. Fortunately for Ausmus, the Tigers need a man in long relieve after a 34 minute rain delay during the 4 th inning forced Ausmus to replace starter Anibal Sanchez. And just like he did numerous times last season, Smyly took the mound early in the game and provided three innings of solid pitching to earn his first win of the season. With two off days next week, Smyly will continue to pitch out of the bullpen. The question is for how long will he remain there. The Tigers wont need a 5 th starter until Monday, April 21 st and Smyly will probably remain pitching out of the pen until then.

Sanchez rebounds after slow start

Speaking of Anibal Sanchez, he probably wishes he could have a mulligan on the first inning against the Orioles. The American League leader in ERA last season, allowed a walk and two hits, including a two-run double to Chris Davis, to the first four batters he faced, but only surrendered a pair of walks from that point on before being pulled after the rain delay. Sanchez tossed only 69 pitches in four innings and struck out three.
