KALAMAZOO -- Sometimes the old ideas are still the best. Detroit has had a year round farmers market operating for 160 years, and this weekend a delegation of local Kalamazoo Leaders will be venturing to the Eastern Market, to see how it works, and to think about duplicating it here. Jim Marshall is with the Potawatomi Resource Conservation and Development Council, and the spark plug behind the drive.

He says it’s more than just making fresh veggies available to the masses, its also creating a sense of community, and a place where its available. Grand Rapids is already developing a similar market. Kalamazoo officials are still just contemplating the concept. No locations have been picked.

Kalamazoo already has an outdoor market during the warm months. This would be indoor and outdoor and year round.
