(Lansing, MI)  --  The state Senate has killed a plan to build a second bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Canada.  Governor Granholm had lobbied Senate Republicans to approve the new bridge, and Democratic Senator Ray Basham of Taylor said a new span would create a more secure border between the U.S. and Canada for commercial traffic and create thousands of jobs.  However, on the final day of he legislative session Thursday, all 22 Republicans and one Democrat voted against bringing the bill up for debate.  Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Moroun has been a vocal opponent of a second bridge, saying it would take business away from him.  Instead, Moroun has proposed building his own privately funded second bridge, but those plans have been opposed by the Canadian government.
