DETROIT (WKZO) -- Disgraced Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is free on bond and a decision is expected today on his attorney's bid to have Judge David Groner disqualified. Kilpatrick is charged with violating probation by failing to meet a restitution payment last month. He says he doesn’t have it.
Kilpatrick's lawyers claim Judge Groner is biased against him. Groner denies it. Legal experts say it may be an attempt by Kilpatrick to avoid jail.
Former Detroit City Council Chair Monica Conyers was given 37 months in prison for her part in accepting bribes from a sludge hauling contractor. She got in a shouting match with the judge, declaring repeatedly that she wanted to withdraw her plea deal, and would appeal the sentence. Those are both things her plea deal specifically prohibits.
Conyers is the wife of Congressman John Conyers, but he has kept his distance from his much younger wife, refusing to comment on her case, and was a no show yesterday. She was even denied use of his parking spot in the Federal Building, where he has an office, and was forced to run through a gauntlet of reporters. She is to report to jail by July 1st.
