KALAMAZOO -- Kalamazoo City Commissioners were warned last night that they could be facing lawsuits if they approve a proposed zoning ordinance that they say is more restrictive than the state’s medicinal marijuana law. Several opponents spoke against the proposal last night.

The city attorney submitted the new zoning rules to the commission last night for first reading. A public hearing is scheduled for the 20th.

Commissioners also voted to strip the Kalamazoo Gazette of a tax-break they were given when they promised to invest in new printing operations and expand their staff downtown. The newspaper’s decision to halt print operations and layoff 58-people was deemed a violation of that agreement and their tax break rescinded last night.
