NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- How do you make it on Broadway? Well for one Portage High School grad…it helps to already know the part.

Blake Whyte had been performing in the road company of “Wicked” for two years, and finally got called up to the big Leagues.

He had just finished climbing Mt. Kilamanjaro in Africa with his family when he got in touch with his agent and got the news about the “Wicked” gig. He started Monday in the ensemble and is the understudy to the male lead. He was a member of the class of 2000 at Portage Central, where he got his start in theatre. Kathy Mulay was his theatre teacher.

He has now been hired to join the cast of the Broadway production of “Mamma Mia” next month. He auditioned for that before he left for Africa.

Whyte is the son of Portage School Trustee John Whyte.
