PORTAGE, MI (WKZO) -- The new Portage Central High School has opened its doors and is ready for the new school year.

Construction has been ongoing for almost two years, but it's finished at long last.  Principal Eric Albertus says they went to great lengths to make sure everyone would feel right at home in the new facility.

They kept parts of the old building, including the auditorium that was built in 1971 and refurbished in 1997.  Most everything else is new with the latest technology meant to help save money in the long run.

About a thousand people turned out last evening to get their first look at the all-new Portage Central, which took 19 months and 41-million dollars to build. Principal Eric Albertus asked everyone to write their hope for the new school on a piece of paper, tie it to a helium balloon and they were all released at once.
