GREEN BAY, Wis. (WSAU) – Wisconsin Public Service has given notice to 74 employees who work at the utility’s coal-fired plants in Weston and Green Bay that they could be laid off next year.

“Given the uncertainty about existing and proposed air pollution regulations and the impacts they will have on the operations of our generation units, we believe it was prudent for both our employees and our customers, to notify Local 310 at this time of future layoffs,” WPS vice president of energy supply operations Terry Jansky said in a written statement.

The local refers to Local 310 of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

The move impacts 16 employees in Weston and 58 employees in Green Bay, said utility spokesman Kerry Spees.

Under the union’s contract, the layoffs cannot begin until 12 months after the notice.
