LANSING, MI (WKZO) Motorcyclists who want to ride without a helmet in Michigan would be allowed to do so, but it will cost them extra, as much as a thousand dollars a year for the additional insurance coverage.

A bill that has cleared the State Senate would require that bikers purchase at least $100-thousand dollars in medical coverage. It passed yesterday 24-to-14 including a yes vote from Senator Bruce Caswell, who said he doesn't understand why a state likeMichiganallows child vaccinations to be up to the parent, but mandates grown adults wear motorcycle helmets.

The additional insurance is designed to offset the biggest argument against letting bikers go “topless” that under no-fault, insurance companies get stuck with paying their medical bills when they collide with other vehicles.

The insurance carriers then pass the costs on to all drivers. Governor Snyder hasn’t said if he will sign it, saying rather that he would like to see it considered under a wider look at auto insurance coverage.  The House won’t take it up until this fall at the earliest.
