KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo city water and sewer customers will see rates go up by nearly 8% next month. Non-city users will see a 2.6% bump in their bill because of new higher rates approved Monday by city commissioners.

Utilities manager Bruce Merchant said the hikes are necessary to maintain the system, which needs improvements.

Merchant said despite the 7.74% rate hike, Kalamazoo city customers are still getting a bargain.

Rates in similarly sized Michigan towns are all higher than Kalamazoo’s. The new rates for residential, commercial and industrial customers take effect on March first.
