The Western Michigan Broncos defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins 3-0 Friday in the first of their two matchups.  The Broncos came out with a ferocity that lasted through the game and the Golden Griffins were unable to match it.

Despite a dominant first period the Broncos were unable to find the back of the net.  Western out shot the Golden Griffins 12-2, and won 16 of 22 faceoffs in the first.  The Broncos were all over the ice, laying hard hits on every Golden Griffin that got in their way.

As the 2nd period started the Broncos kept up the intensity.  The Lawson Lunatics were looking for any reason to explode and Josh Pitt gave them one, scoring his first career goal 9:15 into the period giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead. After only facing two shots in the first period.  Western Michigan goalie Frank Slubowski was tested in the second.  He made two scramblng plays to keep the Golden Griffins off the board when the game was 1-0.  He finished the game stopping all 20 shots he faced, to achieve the fourth shutout of his career.  Later in the period Jordan Oesterle blocked a hard shot off of his right leg.  He came up limping but he did return to the game.  Oesterle notched the Broncos second goal at 14:13 into the second putting WMU up 2-0.

The third started out slowly without any big fireworks until about halfway through the period.  The Golden Griffins finally thought they got on the board but the goal was waved off and Frank Slubowski's shutout reamined intact. Western then went on to add their only power play goal of the game from Mike Cichy with 8:26 remaining in the period.  The game stayed 3-0 as the Broncos improved to 2-1-0 on the season..

Western Michigan will take on Canisius again Saturday night at 7:05pm.
