Preliminary numbers show deer harvest down

LANSING (WKZ0) -- There are a number of reasons, but the Department of natural resources says it appears that the harvest from this year’s firearms deer season is down significantly from last year.

Preliminary figures from deer stations suggest it could be down as much as 10% in southern Michigan and as much as 15 to 20 percent in northern Michigan.

The DNR’s Chad Krumnauer says a heavy late snow in the Upper Peninsula, new rules on shooting young bucks in northern west Michigan, and a late corn harvest were all reasons.

He says high corn gives the deer a place to hide.

Here in Southern Michigan a recent outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease is getting the blame for reducing the deer herd.

Krumnauer says the Muzzle Loader season began Friday, and final numbers won’t be available until spring.
