KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Western Michigan took the Lake Superior Lakers to a shootout but fell short.

The first period was full of physical play as Lake Superior State landed big hit after big hit.  The Broncos were able to withstand the Lakers enforcement as Dane Walters put WMU ahead 1-0 at 7:03.  The period seemed to be all WMU at that point as they had several scoring chances, but were unable to score.  With only 29 seconds remaining in the period the Lakers finally caught a break and beat Frank Slubowski to tie the game at 1-1 going into intermission.

Western Michigan came out in full force in the second period firing 13 shots on net.  Lakers goalie Kevin Kapalka was able to turn away each attempt, making several great saves in the process to keep the Broncos off the board.  Lake Superior State had little offense in the period and both teams were held scoreless, taking the 1-1 tie into the third period.

For the first fifteen minutes of the period the Broncos dominated the ice.  Once again WMU had numerous scoring chances but were shut down.  In the last few minutes the Lakers offense finally showed up but thanks to some fantastic Frank Slubowski saves the game was sent to overtime.

The Broncos once again had extreme pressure on the Lakers through the overtime period, but Kapalka stood his ground forcing a shootout.

Mike Leone scored on the first WMU shootout attempt but the next two Bronco shots were missed.  The Lakers missed their first attempt but scored on their next two, giving Lake Superior State a 2-1 advantage in the shootout and the victory.
