Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) – Despite forcing more turnovers and gaining more yards on the offense the Western Michigan University Football Team could not come out victorious over its archrival Central Michigan, as the Chippewas left Kalamazoo with the Victory Cannon and a 27-22 win over the Broncos, their first in the last three seasons.

CMU (4-6, 3-3 MAC) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter after two touchdowns from running back Zurlon Tipton, who finished with 114 yards on 29 carries, and led 14-6 at halftime after Andrew Haldeman kicked two second quarter field goals from 24 and 33 yards out.

At the beginning of the second half, the Broncos marched down the field and finally were able to turn a drive into seven points as Dareyon Chance scored on a run from 29 yards out to cut the Chips lead to one at 14-13.

The Broncos then took the lead on their next possession after Demetrius Pettway intercepted CMU quarterback Cooper Rush to set up another field from Haldeman, this time from 21 yards out, giving the Broncos a 16-14 lead.

The lead however didn’t last long. Cooper capped off a 12 play 75 yard drive with a three yard TD pass to Mike Kinville to regain the lead. CMU then added on another touchdown after Tony Annese picked off Zach Terrell and returned it for a touchdown, increasing the lead to 11 points at 27-16 with 1:10 left in the third quarter.

Brian Fields scored the Broncos final touchdown four minutes into the fourth from a yard out and the Broncos failed to score on their final two drives and are now 1-10 on the season.

Terrell was 14 of 35 with an interception. Corey Davis was the leading receiving for WMU with three receptions for 40 yards. His brother Titus had nine catches for 122 yards for CMU.

The Broncos wrap up its 2013 season on Tuesday November 26 at Northern Illinois.
