San Diego, CA (WKZO) – Justin Verlander had his first two hits of his career, helping him in picking up his second win of the year, as the Detroit Tigers topped the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Saturday night.
Verlander, who had been hitless in 26 previous at bats, singled in the second inning and again in the fourth inning, and scored his first ever run on Torii Hunter’s two-run RBI double. Despite a shaky first inning in which he threw 29 pitches, Verlander went seven innings allowing just two runs and striking out eight and walking just one.
Hunter and Austin Jackson each drove in two runs and Ian Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera each had RBI doubles.
Padres’ starter Ian Kennedy lasted six innings, giving up four runs and striking out seven.
The Tigers look for the series win on Sunday afternoon, as 2013 Cy Young Away Max Scherzer takes in the mound in the series finale. First pitch is set for 4:10pm.
