KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- It appears that the man shot and killed by Public Safety officers Friday was brandishing a pellet gun when he came to the door.
TV-8 is reporting it was an Air-soft gun, a realistic looking, but non-lethal gun that shoots bits of robber or paper, that usually has an orange barrel so that its easily identified as a toy.
Two Public Safety Officers have been put on administrative leave while the shooting is reviewed internally.
The two officers were investigation Wednesday’s abduction and rape in the Westnedge Hill neighborhood.
42-year-old Brad Mason seemed like a person of interest. He roughly fit the description, was a registered sex offender and drove a red pick-up, like the one mentioned by he victim. The investigation into that crime remains open.
Public Safety says when they knocked on his door at an apartment building at Dutton and Burdick late Friday afternoon, he came to the door with what appeared to be a gun.
The officers retreated down the stairs and gave repeated commands for Mason to drop the weapon.
When he failed to comply, they opened fire, killing him where he stood.
A news conference is tentatively planned for sometime Monday.
