The price tag for snow removal on Michigan roads continues to rise

LANSING, MI (WTVB - The price tag for winter keeps rising. The Michigan Department of Transportation has released its season to date costs and says if February stays cold and snowy, they could break records. Right now they are on a pace to spend $117-million, which would be $17-million more than last year.  That would be a new record.

Their two biggest expenses are overtime and salt. So far they have used 130% more salt than last year, about 228,000 tons all together.  Fuel usage has jumped from 373,000 to over half a million gallons burned so far this winter, with potentially another month of cold  weather to go. Money spent now won’t be available for road projects during construction season, meaning the state’s maintenance and construction schedule will fall even further behind.
