DETROIT (WKZO) -- We told you about the recall of older model GM Compacts last week because of a faulty ignition switch that has caused over half a dozen deaths.

Now GM is doubling the size of the recall after learning that there have actually been 13 deaths and many more injuries.

The original recall focused on Chevy Cobalts and Pontiac G-5’s.

The expanded list includes Saturn Sky and Ions made from 2003 to 2007as well as Chevy HHR’s and Pontiac Solstices.

The new recall totals 1.6-milion vehicles.

They have found that heavy key chains and a bump can switch the engine off and the driver immediately loses power steering, brakes and airbags.  In some cases that has led to crashes.

GM could now possibly be facing lawsuits as well as a big fine from the Transportation Department for failing to act sooner.
