PORTAGE (WKZO) -- Outgoing city executives usually excuse themselves from the discusssion when a commission or a council begins discusssions on picking a replacement.

That's why it was a surprise when retiring Portage City Manager Maurice Evans told the Council  last night that the city need look no further than its own city staff to find his replacement.

He recommended that the City Council elevate Assistant City Manager Brian Bowling to the job and let him run with it.

He told them if it didn't work out, they could always do a search later.

Evans says Bowling has been with the city for 37-years, already knows the issues and would not need a transition period.

Bowling served as Interim City Manager befoe the Council hired Evans for the job.

The Council has set a series of special meetings to discuss their city manager search, and Mayor Pete Strazdas says they will take his suggestion under advisement.
