PHOENIX (WKZO) -- Justin Verlander and the rest of Detroit managed to beat the Diamondbacks in game one of their 3-game series, but the team didn't make it easy.
Monday night's game started out as a sure thing, as the Tigers built a three-run lead with a two-run homer from Torii Hunter and a second homer from Austin Jackson an inning later. But, by the 7th, it could've gone either way as the teams found themselves tied 3-3.
Thankfully, a single from Miguel Cabrera put the Tigers in the lead, and Joba Chamberlain (and later, Joe Nathan) were able to finish what Justin Verlander started. Verlander, for his part, pitched nearly four scoreless innings, and clinched the third-place spot in the team's list of career strikeouts. And, while it was Justin Verlander who got the win, Nathan pitched the final scoreless inning, securing the victory.
The game put a damper on Arizona's 3-game streak (a sweep of the Cubs), and gave Detroit a second straight win after dropping three to Cleveland over the weekend. The Tigers try to keep that momentum going as the series continues Tuesday night. Broadcast time for game two is set for 9:15 PM on 590 WKZO.
