KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Some students get more than just an education at school. For some, its also one of their main sources for nutritious food, and that need doesn’t necessarily end just because school takes a summer break.

That’s why the summer food program begins after classes end.

The meals are prepared in central kitchens in the district and then trucked to 30-food distribution centers around the county,

Phyllis Hepp at Loaves & Fishes says any child under 18 can eat free. Adults can eat for $2.

She says the end of school is immediately felt at the food pantry because suddenly there is a lot more demand for food in the community.

School will be running a little longer this summer because of all those snow days.

The summer lunch program begins June 23rd in most area school districts. A few wait until after the 4th of July to begin.

Some also serve breakfast.
