KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo County Commissioners will be getting a letter from Township trustees expressing their concerns about a proposal to restrict county participation in futureTax increment financing projects.
County Commissioners say there should be some benefit to the whole county if they are going to give away county tax dollars.
Until now they had been routinely approved without having to meet such standards.
Township Supervisor Ron Reid says townships don’t have that many tools to work with to entice development. He also thinks its unfair to approve it for some townships and cities and not for others.
The bigger concern is that a shift like this, and a lawsuit between local municipalities over water and sewer rates may torpedo other intergovernmental projects, like consolidated 9-1-1 dispatch, but county officials say so far it hasn’t been an issue.
