KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Police arresting 10 people over the weekend, with two of them being minors, for their part in what they call Mobile Nuisance Party Activities.
A combined force of 20 officers from the Operations Division, Community Policing Unit, Crime Reduction Team and the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team banded together on Saturday, May 14, to crack down on the large gatherings and illegal activities that commonly take place during these parties.
KDPS has been receiving increased complaints of these mobile parties which typically take place on the weekends in the later evening and early morning hours throughout the Kalamazoo Community: Parties which not only put a strain on law enforcement resources, but also put people in danger with the potential fights and gun violence.
During the operation, officers encountered large crowds in the 2900 block of Howard Street and the 800 block of Woodbury Avenue where they found instances of illegal firearm possession, fighting, open intoxicants, littering, illegal drug possession, loud music, and dancing on cars.
Officers made 10 arrests combined to include a 16 and 17-year-old female who were released to their guardians.
Two officers received lacerations to their hands and were treated at a local hospital.
Five firearms were seized and the eight other adult offenders were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
